Learning the Hard Way is a journey with the Israelites into the wilderness. Shortly after the Children of Israel experienced the grand exodus from their captors in Egypt, reality set in. They soon discovered that freedom from bondage was not quite what they expected. And because they fought against their circumstances and their God at every turn, they were robbed of His joy in the process.
There are so many parallels with our Christian lives in their journey! Nowhere in Scripture are we promised that walking with God will be a bed of roses. Having been saved from the penalty of our sin, there is often a misconception that God is going to make us healthy, wealthy and wise...that He is going to solve all our problems, protect us from harm and maintain for us a happy environment. Active imaginations and an erroneous understanding of His reality set us up for much disappointment.
The Christian life is one of warfare! We can expect battles with the devil, battles with the world and battles with ourselves. Our faith will be tested and stretched, strengthened and tested again. But we are promised that the trial of our faith is more precious than gold, that He is with us in it, promising to supply all that we need if we will only trust and let Him be God... and we are also assured that through the process we are being prepared for something far greater than we can ever imagine.
