The Healthy Church

Before His attentive listeners in Luke 4, Jesus took the scroll and began reading from Isaiah 61. He claimed these prophetical words for Himself. He announced that He had come to preach the Gospel to the poor; to heal the broken-hearted; to liberate those being held captive. He came to give sight to the blind; to release the downtrodden and to usher in a period of grace during which men and women might enter into a personal relationship with God Himself. Later Jesus reveals how His words are to be divinely accomplished  through the organism of His Church.
Healthy is the operative word here. It’s so easy to focus upon the flaws and deficiencies of any local body of believers. But what is an authentic Christian life to look like in a corporate setting, according to this divine mandate?
These messages focus upon the Lord Jesus Christ who, in contrast to organized religion, is the true foundation, the compassionate healer of souls.

The Healthy Church
Through the power of His Holy Spirit, Christ’s Church is to be a place where prayer becomes effective, faithfulness is instilled, lost sheep are found, self-righteousness is exposed, forgiveness brings healing and restoration and where spiritual sight equips us to be ‘more than conquerors’. This is not a utopia but it is a biblical description of a healthy growing organism of flawed people called the Church.

The Overcomer Series

'Overcoming' is defined as "succeeding in dealing with a problem or difficulty." Our invincibility as Christians lies in our claim in an historical fact, through our alliance with a living Person! Overcoming is our spiritual right, our heritage, even our duty...  The word 'duty' needn't stress us because we do not overcome by feelings, circumstances or even by will power.

"Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, if you continue in My word, then are you My disciples indeed; 32 and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:31

Asa: The Victory of Faith

You and I are little micro-kingdoms. Each, a tiny reflection of the political structure existing in the world at large. Depending upon who is reigning at any given moment, we succeed or fail in our endeavors. This single message, telling of the historical Asa from the 9th century BC, illustrates practically how to walk by faith.

The Life of Gideon

There is a territory, in life's turmoil, that God offers the human heart. It is one of quietness, peace and fulfilment. This series on Gideon's life begins with a people out of place, identifying enemies and clarifying the way of discerning God's will; always spotlighting the source of man's strength.

The Life of Gideon
When it came to the battle, God diminished Gideon's resources so that he would not trust in himself. As with this vulnerable man, God consistently shows Himself, glorified through human weakness and inadequacy. Ultimately, through Gideon's story and through ours, the battle is the Lord's and to Him must go the glory!

Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter

Picture
...he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Palm Sunday -the Triumphal Entry.
Leading up to Easter was Palm Sunday, a time when the affections of the people were aspiring to crown Jesus as king of an earthly kingdom... Then a few days later, the same crowd was crying "Crucify Him" Mark 15:13.
Yet, the triune God had a different plan... Jesus was indeed to reign over a kingdom, but not one that they expected. Before being sentenced to the cross, Jesus told Pilate
"
My kingdom is not of this world.." John 18:36
As Jesus bore in Himself the weight of the sin of the world he cried "My God My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"
Matt 27:46
Then a little while later He said "It is finished.” John 19:30 The transaction was finished! This transaction, which begun in the darkness of Gethsemane, was culminated as the eternal Father looked down upon the precious frame of His Son, suspended upon the cross. A transaction, devised in eternity, which made it possible for the penalty for the sins of the human race to be paid in full! ...

Easter Sunday
-Resurrection Day!
After lying, three long days in the tomb, the Father raised Him! The resurrection of Jesus Christ was the demonstration that sins were paid for and that His life was released into the world! A saving, forgiving, redeeming and empowering life! A life that can control you and me, transform our homes, our relationships and the remainder of each singular  existence on this earth! A divine life which may carry a soul, with confidence, into heaven as child of God!

The Epistle to the Ephesians

Ephesians reveals a beautiful blend of eternal mystery, present manifestation and practical mastery. Scattered throughout the early part of this book are glimpses into how God thinks of His children. We are told that a Christian is "without blame, adopted, accepted, redeemed" IN CHRIST...

Ephesians
So why would God give so lavishly? The "why" is partly answered for us in Chapter 2:7-8, where we find it is based solely upon God's mercy and love:
"That in the ages to come He might shew the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast."
This series looks into how receiving God's mercy and love by faith fleshes out in our daily lives, equipping us to face whatever may come.

The Book of Joshua

Joshua was tasked by God to lead the children of Israel, after 40 years of wilderness wandering, into the promised land. The first recorded action of Joshua in Scripture is in the context of warfare. It is an act of obedience and carried out through faith. We are also told that "all these things happened to them as examples and are written for our learning and admonition." I Corinthians 10:11

Joshua
So as we face a New Year, this study in Joshua's life will be a healthy review of how God wants us to approach conflict and the inevitable challenges before us. The warfare of faith is not won by the might or power, by our reasoning or strategy but by His Spirit! Scripture reveals, through Joshua's first hand experience, that expectant prayer is the key to victory!
Pastor Ashley Day's life verse was Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

Christmas Message -2017

12/21/2017

Picture
The Christ of Christmas is knowable! When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, God stepped out of eternity and into time for the specific purpose of bearing the penalty of men's sin upon Himself and restoring relationship with guilty souls.
Christmas Message 2017
Such intimacy with the God of the universe requires a humble cooperation like that of His mother, Mary, who bowed before God's request to enter her life. Like her, our salvation depends upon opening ourselves to Him: "be it unto me according to Your word!" I receive You as my Savior and I give myself to You. I allow You Lord Jesus to come to live within me.
The Christmas story reveals God's initiative, provision and challenges us to trust Him.

I Corinthians

1 Corinthians contrasts the flawed thinking of man, left to himself,  with the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. The Apostle Paul addresses several major themes throughout the book -of unity, wisdom, spirituality, worship, love, gifting and eternal life. Three quarters of the way into I Corinthians, these insights are crowned with chapter 13, the love chapter.

I Corinthians
Scripture often takes our value system of 'success' and paradoxically turns it upside down:
I Corinthians 1:26 "For you see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yes, and things which are not, to bring to nothing  things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him are you in Christ Jesus, Who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 31 That, according as it is written, He that glories, let him glory in the Lord."

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ

Click on the button below to access this series of messages.
The sudden, unexpected and irrevocable return of Jesus Christ is mentioned 318 times in the New Testament, alone. Outside the Bible's parameters and authority, we are open to human speculation, opinion and prejudices.

In this series of four messages, we will seek to interpret what the Bible has to say about end times, comparing scripture with scripture.

The Second Coming

Acts 1:11 You men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

The Wiles of the Devil

Two extremes unbalancing many Christian lives are either an obsession or neglect of Satan. His presence is very real whether we are cognizant of him or not. Sadly, many of us give ‘lip service’ to the presence of spiritual warfare, while our Christian lives contradict our professions. The Wiles of the Devil is a series of four messages helping us identify the strategies of our enemy, the source of our conflict, the weapons he uses and the supernatural authority available to us in the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Wiles of the Devil
How do these verses work out practically in our lives?
John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.
1 Corinthians 15:57: Thanks be to God which gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Acts of the Apostles

Salvation is a personal thing One-to-one. Christ came for one soul because salvation is always in the singular. Each face that composes the world's masses is a person, not just one-of-a-crowd, nameless, blurred and indistinct. When He left the perfection of eternity, lived, suffered, died and rose again, Jesus Christ did so knowing and calling you by name. When you receive Him as your Savior, you do so as an individual, sharply in focus and quite distinct from everyone else around you.

Acts
The book of Acts, begins where the Gospel of Luke ends. The two together make a single, wonderful history of Christianity.
Luke was written originally for the salvation of one soul and it achieved its purpose. We might think “that was a lot of work for the salvation of one person,” but what price can be placed on a human soul?

Old Testament Survey

Our purpose in the Old Testament Survey is to trace the eternal plan of God throughout the scriptures to its conclusion. This 50-message series spans from Genesis through Malachi. Through the next couple months, we will see how the Bible is put together, why each book of the Old Testament is there and what God is saying to us through its pages.
As with any ‘overview’ we are forced of necessity to pass over some deep truths in order to focus on the central theme, so this synopsis may open up new questions for further personal study.

The Life of Joseph

In Joseph's life, we can see God transcend human cunning and deceit to bring about His will; how human rejection, suffering, famine and distress are artfully woven into His plan of redemption. God’s divine purposes were being carried out, while throughout the process, He was guiding, strengthening and protecting Joseph.
The life of Joseph, the 11th of Jacob's sons, is an encouraging study in the overruling purpose and providence of God.

Joseph
When bringing perspective to his remorseful brothers, in Genesis 50:20, Joseph summed it up well:
"As for you, you thought evil against me...but God meant it for good to bring to pass as it is this day, to save many people alive."

While it was going on, Joseph was too close to the scene to know what God was doing but his profound faith and trust in his heavenly Father directed the choices he made and enabled him to navigate his suffering with wisdom. This perspective can be an inspiration through the dark times in our own lives.

Easter -2017

4/14/2017

Picture
As Jesus was led to the cross, He was not captured against His will. He was neither a  martyr  of  the Jewish religious rulers, nor was He a victim of Rome.
In rejecting all the taunts from man and devil to resist His crucifixion, He submitted fully to the purpose for which He came: to accept within Himself the full unmitigated judgement for the sins of mankind.
The process of carrying that weight of the world's sin was something Jesus did -completely alone. In trust, the loving eternal union between the Father and Son was severed as Jesus became sin for us. When taken down from the cross, Jesus the man was fully dead. There was nothing within Jesus' lifeless body to change that.

Easter
What followed three days later, on Easter morning, was something God the Father did!  The breath and physical transformation that restored Jesus, came from His Father Who raised Him to life!
This costly divine transaction was all for the goal of restoring lost sinners into relationship and fellowship with their creator.

"For God was in Christ...reconciling the world to Himself.
He hath made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him." II Corinthians 5:19,21

Life of Jacob
The life of Jacob is one to which most of us can relate. He doesn’t come across as a Daniel or Joseph, who always seem to get it right! No, Jacob’s flaws were right out there for us to see.

As we evaluate our own Christian lives, there are two great themes which we need to keep in mind: The wonders of the beauty and grace of God’s nature and the contrasting unworthiness of our own. These two must always be held in tandem. Seeing only one of the two creates an imbalance which unsteadies our walk with the Lord.

The Epistle of Colossians

The Apostle Paul penned the Epistle of Colossians for the primary purpose of strengthening the Colossae Christians against two errors: religious legalism and human philosophy.

These influences, threatened to undermine the believer's personal faith by substituting human effort or human wisdom for the lordship of Jesus Christ. Both systems glorify man and place the focus upon a supposed human sufficiency. Paul in his concern wrote, "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world and not after Christ." Col 2:8.

Colossians
Running throughout the four chapters of this book is the theme of the exultation of Christ; "for by Him were all things were created..." Col 1:16. and "...it pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell." Col 1:19.

In his prayer in 1:9-14, Paul links Christ's reign to us. Then again, against the shadow of challenged errors, he writes the wonderful words: "For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily and you are complete in Him, Who is the head of all principality and power."
In the last two chapters he shows how this unfathomable union we share with Christ unfolds practically in our daily relationships.

Romans
A grasp of one's identity is a vital factor in the mental and spiritual health of every human being. Without it, we do not know who or what we are or where we fit in the over-all picture. Our identity gives us a foundation, perspective and purpose. Paul writes “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17

A study in Romans (a 45-message series) will be a wonderful way to launch the New Year! The apostle Paul begins this book by focusing upon our personal and corporate identity in the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Despite its thoroughness, Romans does not read like a dry book of theology. Great revivals in church history have been spawned by a study of this book. Augustine, Martin Luther and John Wesley all trace their spiritual renewals to a reading of Romans. Within its chapters, it gives the…final answer to questions about the ‘meaning of life’.” Philip Yancey

Christmas Message -December 2016

12/15/2016

Picture
Who was the child nestled in the Bethlehem manger? His claim upon our lives feels less demanding when we confine Him to the nativity scene... Another way of distancing ourselves is to imagine that God the Father sent a "junior member" while He Himself remained aloof and distant from the plight of His creation.
Yet the Bible reveals through verse after verse, how the full trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit entered our world of flesh through this tiny infant frame; motivated by love and with the redemption and relationship of souls foremost in His thinking, God become flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory...
Christmas Message 2016
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.  He came unto his own, and his own received him not; but as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:10-14

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

The Gospel of Mark

Our focus for the next couple of months is an account of the Divine Servant Who emptied Himself of the 'form of God' in order to serve.

Philippians 2:6-8 captures His heart so well "Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."

Gospel of Mark
These verses, which cameo so well the heart of Mark's Gospel, are found in a context calling for  like-mindedness among God's people and climaxing in the supreme enthronement and exaltation of Jesus to whom "every knee will bow of things in heaven, things in the earth and things under the earth and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:9-11

Of Mark, which covered a period of 7 years, Philip Yancey describes the author as "...deftly controlling camera angles, alternately panning across large crowds and zooming in on individual people... leaving no doubt as to the main character: Jesus rightly placed on center stage and the camera follows him everywhere."

Daniel
The book of Daniel is key to unlocking the mystery of the ages. Without the book of Daniel, it would be almost impossible to understand the prophetic Scriptures as a whole. God prepared Daniel in captivity, as He did Joseph, for the unique role of being God's mouthpiece through the interpretation of dreams.
Daniel humbly answered the King ..."Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His; He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises them up; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness and light dwells with Him. I thank You and praise You, O God of my fathers; You have given me wisdom and might and have now made known to me what we asked of You; for You have made known to us the king's demand." Daniel 1:20-23
